deviantART Headquarters
Stoney Creek by Six-Kings
In our continuous effort to improve the DeviantArt experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

The Runaway Llama Badge

Late last week, two llamas captured the eyes of the world for a few hours, as they were on the run in Sun Valley, Arizona. To celebrate their fleeting freedom, and for the devious fun of it all, an additional level has been added to the already existing llama badge.

Hoax Involving Deleting Accounts

Recently there has been a surge in Journals being posted or shared that say that DeviantArt will be deleting accounts in the near future. This claim is one that we've seen circulate on site through Journals, and is not the first time that the claim has surfaced.

We want to reassure you that this is a hoax. We are not deleting accounts, and DeviantArt staff will always reach out to deviants by official means, from official DeviantArt staff accounts (which can be denoted by the DeviantArt logo proceeding after the username). If you have any questions or concerns about things of this nature in the future, please be sure to file a ticket at the Help Desk, rather than via Journal.

Change Log

  • When submitting literature with a preview image, the preview thumbnail would be broken. Fixed by szlosek
  • When creating a Poll, apostrophes were not being parsed correctly, and would display as \'. Fixed by kemayo
  • The developer API console sidebar can now be filtered. Fixed by justgalym
  • When creating a Collection from the "Add to Favorites" drop menu on deviation pages, trying to add that deviation to the newly created Collection would fail, and would also not give an error message when it did. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • Some Groups would receive an error message saying that had too many widgets in one sone of the Group Profile, even though that wasn't the case. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • On the Activity widget of the Profile Page, if you deleted a Status Update, the widget would still count the deleted status as though it were there, leading to the widget displaying one less item than it should. Fixed by inazar
  • When viewing Group deviations in the Watch Feed, the artist's username would not display properly. Fixed by inazar
  • The Manage Friends page would sometimes fail to load if you created a Deviant List that had specific bad characters in its title. Fixed by szlosek

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • The most common feature mentioned in response to last week's Discuss topic was Notes, which we know (and agree) ought to be present on the mobile app! It's something we still definitely intend to include in future iterations of the app.
  • Deviants also mentioned wanting to see Group notifications from the mobile app.
  • Pichulover20 suggested that swiping the notifications from the Notifications screen on the mobile app could delete the notification.

Discuss!

Your Daily Routine

What are three things you do each day, when you visit DeviantArt? Do you check your Message Center, then Notes, then Browse? What is your general habit, when on site?

Valentine's Day Art Exchange 2015 Wrap-Up!

February often signals the spark of new or lasting love, and this February was no different, marking the fourth annual Valentine’s Day Art Exchange! This year’s event was a grand success, with over 23,000 deviants sending over 130,000 valentines!

Not to be outdone by last year’s event, almost 10,000 artists created and submitted Valentine-themed deviations to the 2015 Valentine Exchange category, a nearly 50% increase from the number of artists who took part in 2014! We also saw deviants spread the love even more than in previous years, as over 65,000 deviants received a valentine.

You are pushing me in all the right buttons by Ry-Spirit  I'll give you the moon by MariLucia

We’re always happy to see positivity and good feelings within DeviantArt, and the Valentine Exchange certainly brought out the best of the community. Ranging from artwork that was cheerful and kind, to lovey-dovey, to outright funny, deviants took their creative talents and put them to use in clever, heartwarming ways.

Happy Valentine by Naschi

This Year’s Top Five

Every year we see some Valentine deviations get sent at an impressively high rate. This year we saw five deviations in particular being sent around the globe numerous times. The top five most popular digital valentines from 2015 are:

  1. Potato Love by Kawiku, sent an astounding 3,241 times!

  2. Happy Valentines by griffsnuff, sent 2,455 times!

  3. I GIVE MY HEART TO YOU by Ry-Spirit, sent 2,423 times!

  4. Valentine 2015 (1) by KhaoShar, sent 1,186 times!

  5. Valentines Day- Thank you for Eeveerything by DragonDogDreams, sent 1,030 times!

We’d also like to give a shout-out to JutsuGal1208, who sent more valentines than any other deviant this year, with over 1,100 valentines sent to almost 1,000 deviants! Talk about really spreading the love!

Happy valentines by griffsnuff  Valentine Sylveon by Midna01

As always, many thanks to everyone who took the time to spread love and cheer this February — whether you created or sent valentines, or even just cheered on the exchange. It’s because of your kindred spirit that we’re able to continue hosting events like these for the community, which in turn helps deviants build lasting relationships with one another. It’s the DeviantArt way of building connections around the globe, but it wouldn’t be possible without you.

Thank you once again for another fabulous Valentine’s Day, and we’ll hopefully see you here next February as well!

Change Log

  • For a short period, voting on a Poll from one's Message Center would always vote for the first option, regardless of which option was actually selected. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When editing the Poll widget on one's Profile Page, clicking Cancel would not cause the widget to return to its standard display. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When in Sta.sh, if you used your native browser's back button to go back a page while your cursor was in a comment field, the items in that Sta.sh would be unclickable. Fixed by baclap
  • DeviantArt muro would, in some circumstances, fail to import deviations. The fix for this required the removal of support of DeviantArt muro for Internet Explorer 10 or earlier. Fixed by sgrahamUK
  • Items in the Favourites menu in the top right corner of the site would have incorrectly colored backgrounds. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • Page scrolling would occasionally occur when selecting a Poll option by clicking on the text. Fixed by kemayo
  • For Safari users in Sta.sh Writer, creating a link inside of a nested list would cause the linked text to duplicate itself. Fixed by baclap
  • Deviation descriptions briefly did not allow <strike> HTML to be used. Fixed by kemayo
  • When on one's Gallery page and using the pencil menu to move or copy deviations, the menu would extend off the edge of the screen if the deviation was on the right edge of the screen. Fixed by inazar
  • It was briefly possible to drag subfolders into other subfolders, when viewing one's Gallery. Fixed by DEVlANT

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • In response to the Discuss topic on push notifications, Notes were the most common item that deviants mentioned wanting to receive push notifications for.
  • Some deviants also said that they'd like to receive push notifications for mentions, comments, replies, and Group correspondence, though a few mentioned that they specifically did not want notifications from Groups, comments, or replies.
  • While other responses for or against certain push notifications were varied, several responding deviants did note that they wanted to have a level of control over what items sent them notifications.

Notifications on the Mobile App

For deviants who use the DeviantArt Mobile App, do you regularly use of the Notifications screen (pictured below)? What aspects of the screen do you like? What features or changes would make it more useful to you?

Change Log

  • Notes wouldn't load properly when reached via a direct link (e.g. from the Message Center). Fixed by szlosek
  • A number of deviations were submitted during a partial outage, causing their thumbnails to be broken. These thumbnails have since been repaired. Fixed by szlosek
  • Critiques could not be enabled on Motion Books, even though the option appeared when submitting. Fixed by trezoid
  • Some Group Correspondence messages were being miscounted, which could result in nonexistent Correspondence messages being included in the Message Center count. Fixed by trezoid
  • When on the Browse page in Firefox, if you were viewing a category with many subcategories while viewing a search query that had no results, it would be impossible to scroll down far enough to select a subcategory further down the category tree. Fixed by elhsmart
  • Viewing More Like This results would incorrectly change one's default homepage to Browse. Fixed by lepidosteus
  • Using the search bar at the top of the site while on a search resuls page in the Groups portal would cause a bad query. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When in Sta.sh, editing a stack's description and then hitting the browser's back button would cause the page to say that your Sta.sh was empty. Fixed by baclap
  • There were visual issues with the name input section of the Porftolio creation process. Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! There were a variety of responses given to last week's Discuss topic, mostly because art creation is a process that's different from one person to the next. However, we did get overlapping responses from a variety of people, so here are the common themes we noticed between responses:
  • Deviants tend to create on a daily basis, though it's usually smaller works that they aren't as likely to share online or with others.
  • Some deviants said that they start off intending to create smaller works, but that those smaller works tend to become larger works simply because they enjoy working on it.
  • A few mixed media artists mentioned starting off work with a sketch on one day, and then transferring to another media to expand on it the next.

Push Notifications

If you could enable push notifications from DeviantArt's mobile app when you receive messages, what items would you want to receive notifications for (for example, comments or favourites on your art)?

Change Log

  • When on the Submit page, the Submit menu in the site header would not be correctly positioned. Fixed by baclap
  • Browsing using the "Previous" and "Next" buttons stopped working, when viewing deviations from a stack in one's Message Center. Fixed by trezoid
  • It was possible to upload .doc and .docx files to some categories, even though we don't offer support for them. Fixed by trezoid
  • The More and Shop menus at the top of the site did not work when viewing them as a logged-out user. Fixed by duraseb
  • In the Admin Area of Groups, the Action Log would incorrectly display a "member ID" column. Fixed by baclap
  • Pasting a deviation link into a deviation description would incorrectly change the link into a thumbnail, for non-Premium Members. Fixed by kemayo

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update
  • The top 3 mentioned uses for Notes in response to the Discuss topic were roleplaying, exchanging information for commissions/art trades/art requests, and having private casual conversation with friends.
  • Deviants also said that they use Notes when planning contests or collaborative events, when contacting individuals on behalf of a Group, and sending Daily Deviation suggestions.

Your Creative Output

How often do you create art? Do you make sketches or rough draft work regularly, or do you restrict yourself to creating what you consider to be completed works?

there's a journal being sent round currently saying:

"As of May the twenty first, deviantART will be deleting ALL  dA accounts. Not the plz accounts though. But just all name-wasted accounts, or accounts that we think are fake, or that are useless. We are doing this to prevent something that could possibly may happen in the future. If we find this message on you're deviantID, journal, etc. We will know that you are not a fake.

Thank you for listening,

-deviantART staff "

Is this true or just a hoax someone thought would be fun to do?

This may sound mushy...but I am just grateful for the guys (and girls) that fix the problems and bugs that crop up in our website.  Even though these things happen, this is STILL the most efficiently and professionally social network out there.  It is my main one and will will continue to be so.  Thank you.
