Valentine's Day Art Exchange 2016!

Mon Feb 1, 2016, 11:44 AM
Og-preview by seoul-child

Digital love is in the air! Break out the candy hearts and crafting paper, because the Valentine’s Day Art Exchange is back! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now’s the time to create digital valentines for your fellow deviants to share with their special someones.

Take part and spread the love!

Start now by creating a digital valentine to be submitted to the Valentine Exchange category. Then, from February 12th to 16th, deviations in the Valentine Exchange category can be sent as valentines to your friends and loved ones!

How it works

Submit

Create Valentine-themed deviations and submit them to the Valentine Exchange category.

Send

From February 12th to February 16th, a special “Send a Valentine” button will appear on deviation pages for deviations submitted to the Valentine Exchange category.

Share the love

Your friends will receive the deviation you send, along with your Valentine message, in their Notes.

Heart-filled hints

  • Deviations submitted to the Valentine’s Exchange category will be available for everyone to send. Avoid including specifics on your deviations - such as a deviant’s username, real name, etc.
  • Fallen in love with one of your previous designs? It’s okay! If you’ve included text suggesting it’s for a lover, you can change the design to look as though it were to a friend or from a secret admirer, and then resubmit it.
  • You can submit as many deviations to the category as you want.

February 12

Send your Valentine

Remember to come back on February 12th to celebrate the season of love with us! Not only will you be able to start sending valentines, but you’ll also see some special new additions to this very page.

Holiday Card Project 2015 Wrap-Up

Fri Jan 29, 2016, 11:26 AM

The Holiday Card Project returned in 2015 for its 9th year, and it once again was a cheerful success! With over 4,500 cards from over 2,000 deviants and artists from all over the world, people who could not be home for Christmas this year received some extra holiday joy this season!

Unique cards poured in from across the world—from beautiful hand-made cards to digital and delightful creations, we had a fantastic selection of cards to send out! If you’d like to see the various cards created for the project, take a moment to explore the#HolidayCardProject tag.

With so many cards coming in, I recruited staff members at HQ to open the envelopes with me! We spent three days straight opening every card single card and sorting them into various piles. A huge shout out goes out to Heidi, danlevbittygirla, damphyr, aunjuli, makepictures, ivancureno, Twee689, and tiffanyxli for all of their help. Thank you so much!!

Once the cards were received and sorted, we reached out to hospitals in our community and abroad. Our first stop was the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, as they accepted cards from us for the third year in a row. I had the chance to sit down and explain DeviantArt's purpose and the community to the director of volunteer services, as she showed me the flyers the put up while handing out cards!

We also took cards to other various hospitals and nursing homes across Los Angeles! From Huntington Hospital in Pasadena to St. Francis in Lynwood, patients across the Greater Los Angeles Area felt your love and support. While we weren't able to hand out cards to patients in person, they went into the  hands of the volunteer services department.

In addition to the cards we passed out in Los Angeles, we mailed cards to volunteers around the world who helped us spread the holiday joy around the globe. Cards were handed out in New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland, and, for the first time ever, in Sevilla, Spain! Our fantastic volunteers, AnimeRocks26, njwag, and Ikebosev all did a wonderful job handing out the cards.

As promised, everyone who sent in a card has now been granted a free 1-month Core Membership!  In the event you participated in the Project and haven’t received your Core Membership, don’t fret! Just send me (madizzlee) a note with the following information:

    Bullet; Green Your name
Bullet; Red Approximately when your card was sent
Bullet; Green A one sentence description of your card
Bullet; Red Where you sent it from

Please note: If you already have an active Core Membership, the 1-month Core Membership has been added to that existing Core Membership, and will take effect once your current one expires.

Once again, thank you to everyone for spreading the holiday cheer!

Encouraging New Deviant Engagement

Tue Jan 26, 2016, 12:13 PM by Heidi:iconheidi:

Receiving comments on your deviations can be one of the most rewarding aspects of DeviantArt. The moment you make the decision to share your art with the world, you're ready to connect with kindred spirits, hear their tips, and share feedback of your own.  The cycle is rewarding for each and every participant.

Untitled-1 by danlev

Starting today, we’re running a few experiments that aim to bring attention to new and undiscovered deviants on DeviantArt.  When such a deviant submits a deviation, he or she will be shown suggested deviations and prompted to leave a comment.  The purpose of this project is to create bonds between new deviants and help people find similar artists to grow with.

This feature is experimental, and we’re testing to see how something like this helps deviants grow as an artist and meet new people.

Notes Search Now Available

One of the most highly requested features is now here: the ability to search notes! Notes search allows you to do things like:

  • Find all notes you’ve sent to a specific deviant
  • Find all notes from a deviant that contain a keyword
  • Search for a keyword within a custom folder
  • Find all unread notes that contain a keyword
  • Search your drafts
To search your notes, simply enter a keyword in the search box. You can also use the advanced search dropdown to filter your search results.

Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 12.17.29 PM by danlev

Advanced Operators

Advanced operators can help you narrow your search:
  • subject:keyword — Find notes with a keyword in the subject. Example: subject:commission.
  • body:keyword — Find notes with a keyword in the body. Example: body:painting.
  • " " (quotes) — Search for an exact phrase. Example: "art gallery".
  • (hyphen) — Used to exclude notes that contain a keyword. Example: painting -digital.

Visit Your Notes

Note: During the initial launch, only the past year of your notes will be searchable. We hope to expand this in the future.

Starting today, status updates posted by deviants you watch now appear in your notifications. This has been a popular request from deviants who actively post status updates. With status updates in notifications, it will ensure that more of your watchers see your posts.

Like other notifications, status updates can be viewed in list view (text only) or grid view (full thumbnails). Status update notifications can also be stacked, which groups notifications by deviant together.

Make Your Status Update Stand Out

Adding a deviation to your status updates is a quick way of making it stand out to your watchers. Simply add a deviation by pasting a link to a deviation in your Status Update, or use the "Add Media" button.

An Easy Way To Communicate With Your Watchers

Status updates are a quick and easy way to communicate with your watchers. They’re a great way to give an insider peek about what you’re working on, share inspiring art or articles, feature your favorite artists, or simply share what’s on your mind.

Post a Status Update

Or, view your notifications to see

Hi
I was wondering if there is a art stealing Portection system or if no make one?
I've been seeing ALOT of reports of art stealing on the smaller side of DA.
It would be really helpful.

If yall would only add a Search feature(of any kind)or even a page system to the Sta.sh archives that would be just exemplary|
ALSO
One of tha most tedious/time-consuming/inconvenient jobs in being tha founder & only admin of your group is going over submissions to determine if any of em will serve the image of your group right: it entails opening tha group page of submissions, bypassing any that you've selected yourself, opening a submission in a separate window to get a closer look at tha deviation itself and maybe get some background info thereof...sometimes that's it but 6x out of 10 there's an issue with it so, ya gotta go back & click the "No Comments" button under the "YES/NO" buttons to maybe open that in another separate window to ask about any issues you have with said submission, actually ask tha sender about the issue(s) or talk privately about it with your subordinates(this is about being the only admin however), wait patiently for response or make judgment right then & there!

I propose making the submission screen very much tha same as tha search screen with tha deviation display set to Full View so we can now have a close-up of the deviation from tha start along with any info tha deviator felt necessary to attach to it on top of having tha comms system(each seperate side or just tha "visible to sender" comm)at tha ready with "YES/NO" where the "Fave List" button would normally be!
1 MORE THING
Whose idea was it to get rid of the Webcam(s) on tha front page(s) of users all across Tha dA?

Please! Make a feature to block one user so that he/she cannot see your art anymore!
I've had so much problems with arttheft and this persons didn't care. If you aksed friendly to take the stolen piece down: No it's not stolen and ehh.
This is like talking to a wall.
If Somebody knows the name of the thief you could ban him/her out of your gallery so he or she can't see your pics anymore.
That's already there with non deviantArts so outlocked people. Why not with deviants? That would be a great protection against theft of you know the person!

I also need help if in this case will work DMCA and what happens when dA sais that it's not stolen so they'll not take it down? What will happen to me? Or the stolen piece. And it IS stolen but you never know for sure what dA does... comments.deviantart.com/1/5444…

All someone has to do to bypass such a block system is to log off and view the account, so it's never gonna happen.

This block method would be really nice!
Take facebook for example, when you block someone there for bith sides you can't find and can't see of the person. That would be nice if that's on dA aswell, especially because of such persons you are talking or just simple that you feel bad when a person that made you a lot of problems is still stalking your page. :c

If this is happening on a regular basis with a single individual, then you can file a case for harassment, both with the site and with law enforcement (cyber-harassment). You'll want to check the laws for your area to make sure that it falls under their definition. Since your profile says you're fifteen, I would recommend speaking to your parent/guardian before filing a report. Also, document everything with screen captures; even if DA doesn't accept them as evidence, law enforcement often will.

Depends on what country, jurisdiction, etc., as well as how much evidence you have. Perhaps you simply haven't been talking to the right attorneys.

What is a law enforcement?
DMCA? I talkef to her.
She insulted me badly and thinks that it's ok to trace although I did NOT blocked her. She blocked ME!
So how tha hell could she asl me for permission if SHE blocked ME?
And no this is not happening once. She stole all the deviations in her gallery. Or highly referenced and traced parts of it to troll us and then insults and blocks us. Wow how can I talk to her?
Talking to this person is talking to a wall. Makes no sence and doesn't do anything. She was already there and we tried to get this solved normally but no. She kept herself stubborn as hell and went on stealing.
I've also filled a DMCA already cause she traced my art and stole one character with every detail. She stole also the closed inc demon spegies from :iconq33n:.
She needs to get banned otherwise there is no other way stopping her.

Law enforcement = police. If there is a law against cyber-harassment in your country, you can discuss your options with your parents and see if filing a police report is viable.

Her insults may qualify as cyber-harassment; without having seen them, I can't say for certain. Her behavior, if repeated over a defined period of time despite requests to cease and desist, may be cause for filing a report with law enforcement. But because you are underage, you need to discuss that with an adult who is familiar with the laws of your jurisdiction and can advise you as well as protect your interests. Don't assume that the police won't do anything in your case just because they may not have in another. Remember, despite knowing someone well, you only have their side of events and facts from their perspective. There may well be other factors which might have caused their case to fall through - such as how they behaved in response to alleged harassment. I can personally attest to harassment cases that have fallen apart because of the alleged victim reacting poorly and responding to their harassers with trolling; one such case was in Canada with a man diagnosed with autism having been harassed and humiliated online. He proceeded to harass right back, and while a case can be made that he simply didn't understand because of his medical diagnosis that it was improper behavior, it damaged his case.

Whether a DMCA takedown will cover the offense, I cannot say for certain. What I can say is that if you are filing it in good faith that your rights have been violated and provide evidence to that effect, then it will be reviewed thoroughly and the staff will make a determination as to whether they believe that a copyright violation has occurred. However, in filing it, please be aware of the "Fair Use" clause, which is covered in the ProtectArt journal you linked above. If you'd like to read some (somewhat) controversial discussions on the topic of Fair Use, you can Google "Richard Prince" and "Instagram". Richard Prince's name alone will get you cases where he has been accused of violating copyright. There was one case where he used multiple images from the same photographer and simply painted over parts of them. In some instances of those images, it was found that he had violated copyright. But in others, his use was determined by a court of law to be a "Fair Use" of the original material. "Fair Use" is a tricky thing.

Obviously you did read the comment I left for her on the piece in question, advising her that you had not given permission and linking her to the same comment you linked above. I also requested that she remove it and linked her to the site's FAQ. Three of DA's FAQs are linked in my signature, so if she has enabled the ability to view signatures, then she can see all three. She has not responded to that comment, though; and I know that you had said she blocked you. I was giving her the opportunity to admit that openly so that I could explain to her plainly that it would be impossible for her to ask for permission. Once she admits publicly that she blocked you personally prior to "attempting to ask for permission", then you have proof of intent of theft, and can link to such a comment in a DMCA takedown request. Because then she has admitted to a willful violation of your copyright.
