What's New

New Beta Tester Features: Site Navigation, Activity Feeds & Status Updates

Three major changes to the way the deviantART works have just been launched to some of our Beta Testers! We’re pleased to announce the beta release of a redesigned site navigation and two entirely new features — Activity Feeds and Status Updates — bringing exciting new options to deviantART’s browsing and sharing experience.

Watchable Collections are Coming

As part of the new Activity Feed feature that's been released to our Beta Testers, Collections can now be watched, and will display on the Activity Feed when deviations are added to them. Watching deviants' Favourites has been a long-requested feature, and we're happy to offer a new way to discover art!

If you’d prefer not to have a Collection displayed in other deviants' Activity Feeds, simply visit that Collection, click the "Collection Options" button in the top right, and select the "Disable watching" checkbox (unwatchable Collections are still displayed on your Favourites page).

Site Outages

Over the past weekend, some users' access to the site was inconsistent. Our team of developers were aware and working on this situation as it was ongoing, and we apologize for any inconvenience during the outages.

Please keep an eye on our Status Forum for updates about happenings like these. Our Help Desk team posts regularly about outstanding issues, so you can easily see if an issue you're encountering is one that we're already aware of. Thank you!

Change Log

  • When adding or editing tags, the input box would not always recognize keyboard controls. It now recognizes these controls, and will also react to highlighting text via mouse click, making everything selected editable. Fixed by szlosek
  • The autocomplete menu for tags on the Submit page would sometimes stall on "Searching...". Fixed by kemayo
  • Literature deviations created more than a year ago and edited with a new version could still contain an older draft of the work instead of the current version, when selecting "Download". Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the commentary you left for us:
  • In response to the Discuss topic, generally deviants mentioned that they don't comment on Collections made by other deviants.
  • Deviants who have commented on Collections said it was usually to thank the person for adding their art to their Collection, moreso than to comment about the Collection itself.
  • Deviants liked the suggestion that the tag input field could have a "Recently Used Tags" menu.

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the commentary you left for us.

  • In response to the Discuss topic, deviants mentioned that they find out about new creation tools from friends, or while in stores looking for other things.
  • A few deviants mentioned that they try new tools based on what other artists they know use, and what artists they aspire to be like use.

Creating in New Media

How do you typically find out about or try out new tools or items to create with? Do you hear about them through friends, artists you aspire to, blogs, review sites, etc.? Are there certain things you look for before trying a new tool out?

Keywords on deviations were built to be an important tool to help discover artwork. But as deviantART grows and strives to create new ways to discover great content, we’ve found that keywords as we currently use them have become underutilized.  We think we can do better -- and can make a better experience for the community -- by making some changes.

In the coming month, keywords will transition into tags, and we’ll be improving the way they work. Tags will better surface artwork, allow deviants to form communities around topics, make it easier to find other artists and art appreciators, and increase discoverability.

For example, if you're a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles it can be difficult to know what to search for: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Turtles, TMNT, Donatello, etc.  Public tags provide visibility to see how others are tagging their deviations, which will allow you to align your behavior to the norm, or choose to be deviant!

Getting Started

You’ll hear more about tags in the coming month, but to prepare for the upcoming release now, we wanted to let you know that:

  1. Keywords are changing to tags.

  2. Tags will soon be publicly visible on deviation pages.

  3. Our system will automatically transition some of your keywords to the appropriate tags for better discoverability when tags fully launches (for example, common keyword phrases such as “lord of the rings” will become “#lordoftherings”).

As a reminder, tags on deviations can be edited at any time.  If you’d like to update your deviations before any changes are released, now’s the time to do so!  (Simply visit any of your deviations and click the "Edit" button.  You don't need to add a hashtag before a tag, but you can!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
Some of my new deviation tags look weird.  What gives?

Answer:
The old keyword field was unstructured, while new tags are all single words.  In the keyword to tag conversion process, we had to do a bit of guesstimation regarding the translation.  A keyword field for "my little pony" might mean “#mylittlepony,” while "sunset australia watercolor" might intend "#sunset #australia #watercolor."  In the event you see a tag that doesn't apply to your deviation, simply remove anything not appropriate.

Question:
I can only enter 64 tags to describe my deviation, but I was previously able to enter as many keywords as I wanted.  What gives?

Answer:
Public tags provide visibility around seeing how others are tagging their deviations.  One of the problems with keywords was that everyone had to invent their own terms or guess what others were using.  There would be many keywords around the same topic -- my little pony, mlp, mplfim, mylittlepony, my_little_pony, fim, friendshipismagic, and so forth.  By making tags public, you'll be able to discover tags that the community is using in a more predictable way.  Having 10 or 20 relevant tags will enable more people to see your art than having 100 irrelevant ones.

Your Feedback

We’re excited to show you what we’re working on, and will be updating you more about the power of tags in the coming month.
For now, we’d love to hear your feedback:

  • Do you add keywords to all of your deviations? Roughly how many do you typically add?

  • Do you base your keywords on medium, subject matter, or other things?

  • What keywords do you commonly search for?

Let us know how you’re currently using keywords, so we can make the new tags as powerful and as useful as possible.

Hello Deviant art, I have recently stumbled upon a suspicious group that may be up to something. I recently commented things that I found to be suspicious in their comments section and left. I did not get a reply nor defence from the admin of the group but instead my comment was hidden along with several others and I was blocked, pls check it out. I would appreciate it :)

Well what I found to be the problem was that they were several hidden comments and replies, then the random invites to the group and the constant auto accept of any deviation in any folder. But the thing that set me on edge about their suspicion was two things
1. The page views and watcher ratio at certain points are....in a word unstable
2. When I commented that they were up t something and I was leaving my comment was hidden and I was blocked immediately.

they must've thought you were a hater. are you familiar with the anime community? most anime haters are psycho!  If i owned a successful group like that and there was just a hint of negativity coming from a stranger, I'd block them too because that's how the harassment begins. but seeing that you do have a point as well i'd say to watch them silently until you see that there's something up and get that proof. :)

I'm sure you're all aware of this, but a lot of people have been going on about another hacker story. And this time they've been mentioning accounts that have been deactivated. I know you woudl alert us if this was a serious problem, but I thought you ought to know just in case. the journal mainly looks like this fav.me/d7z8aep

99% of the journals like that are based on hoaxes and don't have a single bit of truth to them. You can recognize them because they describe exactly what the "hacker" will do, provide time frames for them to do it in and otherwise give you super-specific details.

On the rare occasion that unauthorized access actually happens it's not a case of "hacking" in the way that these journals mean it- it's almost always a case of the account owner sharing their password. Whether they share it with friends who later decide that it would be "fun" to vandalize their account or they fall for some scam by someone who tricks them into revealing their password or changing it to a suggested "safe" password it's almost always bad security habits like that.

If you choose a smart password and never reveal it to anybody for any reason and follow common-sense online security habits the chances of anybody "hacking' your account are pretty slim to nil.

You're going to have to go into more detail about this, because saying deviantART 'messes up' is a pretty broad term; no one will be able to help you if they don't know what needs to be fixed.

It's to 'lump' similar kinds of art together, sort of like sorting it all so that you don't have to dig through hundreds of artwork pieces just to find what you're looking for, if that makes any sense.

You guys sure are hypocritical about things you deem porn, half this site is girls taking nude pictures which is literally just porn and you do nothing case in point: www.deviantart.com/art/MX-girl… or www.deviantart.com/art/Pussy-2… but you block urls to tumblrs and delete users art (actual drawn artwork) because its 'lewd'. I'm thinking you guys just have a double standard and keep the stuff you like to fap to.

What if yall made it so we go to tha homepage of tha group(s) we want to affiliate with and type in our group name(s) instead of having to go back to our own group(s) to type in tha name of any group(s) we may want to affiliate with which is especially MORE tedious when ya wanna make an affiliation between upwards of 3 groups you already admin with ONLY 1 GROUP that has a rather unorthodox structure to their title!

Deviantart isn't allowing me to sign in on my iPad. That's where all my artwork is so if I can't fix this problem then I won't be able to upload art.
I had recently cleared all of my cookies on my iPad (so I was automatically forced to log out when I did that) and I had also changed my email on my deviantart earlier that day. When I tried to log back in it said "form timeout please try again." I tried again and again but I still keep getting the same message. I don't know what I should do.
