In our continuous effort to improve the DeviantArt experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

  • For a short period, voting on a Poll from one's Message Center would always vote for the first option, regardless of which option was actually selected. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When editing the Poll widget on one's Profile Page, clicking Cancel would not cause the widget to return to its standard display. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When in Sta.sh, if you used your native browser's back button to go back a page while your cursor was in a comment field, the items in that Sta.sh would be unclickable. Fixed by baclap
  • Items in the Favourites menu in the top right corner of the site would have incorrectly colored backgrounds. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • Page scrolling would occasionally occur when selecting a Poll option by clicking on the text. Fixed by kemayo
  • For Safari users in Sta.sh Writer, creating a link inside of a nested list would cause the linked text to duplicate itself. Fixed by baclap
  • Deviation descriptions briefly did not allow <strike> HTML to be used. Fixed by kemayo
  • When on one's Gallery page and using the pencil menu to move or copy deviations, the menu would extend off the edge of the screen if the deviation was on the right edge of the screen. Fixed by inazar
  • It was briefly possible to drag subfolders into other subfolders, when viewing one's Gallery. Fixed by DEVlANT

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • In response to the Discuss topic on push notifications, Notes were the most common item that deviants mentioned wanting to receive push notifications for.
  • Some deviants also said that they'd like to receive push notifications for mentions, comments, replies, and Group correspondence, though a few mentioned that they specifically did not want notifications from Groups, comments, or replies.
  • While other responses for or against certain push notifications were varied, several responding deviants did note that they wanted to have a level of control over what items sent them notifications.

In our continuous effort to improve the DeviantArt experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

  • Notes wouldn't load properly when reached via a direct link (e.g. from the Message Center). Fixed by szlosek
  • A number of deviations were submitted during a partial outage, causing their thumbnails to be broken. These thumbnails have since been repaired. Fixed by szlosek
  • Critiques could not be enabled on Motion Books, even though the option appeared when submitting. Fixed by trezoid
  • Some Group Correspondence messages were being miscounted, which could result in nonexistent Correspondence messages being included in the Message Center count. Fixed by trezoid
  • When on the Browse page in Firefox, if you were viewing a category with many subcategories while viewing a search query that had no results, it would be impossible to scroll down far enough to select a subcategory further down the category tree. Fixed by elhsmart
  • Viewing More Like This results would incorrectly change one's default homepage to Browse. Fixed by lepidosteus
  • Using the search bar at the top of the site while on a search resuls page in the Groups portal would cause a bad query. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When in Sta.sh, editing a stack's description and then hitting the browser's back button would cause the page to say that your Sta.sh was empty. Fixed by baclap
  • There were visual issues with the name input section of the Porftolio creation process. Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! There were a variety of responses given to last week's Discuss topic, mostly because art creation is a process that's different from one person to the next. However, we did get overlapping responses from a variety of people, so here are the common themes we noticed between responses:
  • Deviants tend to create on a daily basis, though it's usually smaller works that they aren't as likely to share online or with others.
  • Some deviants said that they start off intending to create smaller works, but that those smaller works tend to become larger works simply because they enjoy working on it.
  • A few mixed media artists mentioned starting off work with a sketch on one day, and then transferring to another media to expand on it the next.

Push Notifications

If you could enable push notifications from DeviantArt's mobile app when you receive messages, what items would you want to receive notifications for (for example, comments or favourites on your art)?

Outcast Odyssey

In the Outcast Odyssey Card Master Challenge, we asked you to design a new Witch/Warlock, Dragon/Monster, or Steampunk Warrior for use in the new Outcast Odyssey game, and the winners are in!

We were honored with judges of the highest possible calibre: contracted Outcast Odyssey artist and DeviantArt member Warren Louw, Senior Designer at Magic Pixel Games Jonathan Durr, and Mobile Games Producer at Namco Bandai Games America Joe Riego. Our esteemed judging team pored over every semi-finalist’s entry in great detail.

Only a handful of illustrations would best translate into a card to be featured in the game, and after much thoughtful consideration, our judges agreed on the following three pieces. View the alluring Witch, monstrous Dragon, and formidable Sorceress picked as finalists, and read the judges’ comments below. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who participated!

GRAND PRIZE WINNER

"The design of this dragon was so unique. The artist did a great job with the composition and the sense of scale on the creature."

- Jon Durr

"There were a lot of great dragons in the contest but this particular piece stood out as having a real surreal feel to it and it just fits in the world of Outcast Odyssey."

- Joe Riego

"Excellent use of colour with a solid painterly technique bringing through a wonderful design with epic scale. A worthy OO dragon!"

- Warren Louw

GRAND PRIZE WINNER

"The pose, vibrancy and overall render really stood out for me. She's creepy yet gorgeous, and just a really fun take on the concept of a witch."

- Jon Durr

"The use of colors and composition was excellent. I really enjoyed her pose as well as it just screamed card right from the get go!"

- Joe Riego

"Superb layout, harmonious colour and lighting with captivating attention to design and details. Very nicely thought out character creating a magical energy, perfect for OO!"

- Warren Louw

GRAND PRIZE WINNER

"We've played a lot with different perspective on the cards, and know how tricky it is. This image nailed that perspective. The detail in the snake was incredible while not stealing the scene away from the central character."

- Jon Durr

"This piece elevates the standard fantasy trope of the wicked witch. The use of perspective, the dynamic lighting and vibrant use of color creates a stunning visual."

- Joe Riego

"Skilfull execution of composition, values, colour and detailing doing great justice to the character. An epic pleasure to look at!"

- Warren Louw
