The Order: 1886 Gadgets and Gear Contest

Illustrate an original gadget, outfit, or weapon inspired by the industrial world of The Order: 1886.

In this new game set in Victorian England, you will fight your way through zeppelins, mansions, and the gloomy streets of London with the help of unique Neo-Victorian inventions. What other gadgets, outfits, and weapons will help you along the way? Create a new device or a new version of an existing invention for The Order's collection for the chance to win a PS4 console and a trip to Sydney!

The Order: 1886 creates an alternate history in which a war between humanity and bestial Half-breeds has been raging for centuries.

Now in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, humanity has come ahead with the use of gadgets and weapons inspired by the inventions of Nikola Tesla. However, there's a new threat to the peace of London: a rebellion in the lower classes against the Knights of the Order and the society they represent. It's up to The Order to maintain peace and to protect humanity while danger lurks around every corner.

In this vision of Neo-Victorian London, innovators and inventors of the time have been forced to take their creations a step further, building masterful scientific works of destruction and defense. Explosive thermite rounds and bolts of concentrated electricity — these are just two of the innovative ways science has improved weaponry. Based off of actual scientific inventions of our own 1880s era, your weapons will reflect fascinating reality and advanced ingenuity combined.

Along with your advanced arsenal, various cutting-edge gadgets will help you greatly in your battle to maintain peace. With the vast scientific advances of the Industrial Revolution, The Order's technology has progressed further than anyone could have imagined. Whether you're seeing across great distances with a monocular or contacting airships and your fellow knights via wireless communicator, these gadgets will remarkably benefit your endeavors.

As a Knight of The Order, you are in charge of keeping the peace in the streets of London. You have to be ready for any manner of fisticuffs you may encounter, whether with one of the Half-breeds or one a member of the rebellion. True to Neo-Victorian style, your garb is not only highly practical for battle, but also fashionable and representative of the era.

What's New

The New Mobile Web Header

A new header for the mobile website has just been released! Our mobile website header has been given a minor overhaul to be more mobile-friendly, and given a sleek new look to match.

Menu items have been updated for ease of access and use, providing a solid balance of clarity and functionality. Everything that was previously available through the menu accessed by tapping on the logo is still present, so everything you know and love is still one tap away.

Change Log

  • The Webcam widget on Profile Pages has been phased out. Over the years, as the web has evolved, it has lost its original value. Members can include images in Custom widgets or widget descriptions. Premium Members will have their webcam image automatically transitioned into a Custom widget tomorrow.
  • For a short time, uploading files was not working consistently. Fixed by chris
  • Under certain circumstances, literature and Journal deviations could end up in a partially submitted state, creating a deviation page and duplicate Sta.sh item without sending a Message Center notification. The root cause of the problem has been fixed; affected deviations will be repaired in the near future. Fixed by kemayo
  • Ads were not positioned correctly, when on the mobile website. Fixed by baclap
  • In some instances, newly created Groups would have a duplicate Journal tab. Fixed by DEVlANT
  • Older URLs to browse specific categories would not redirect to the proper new URLs. Fixed by elhsmart
  • Copying and pasting a deviant's username into a deviation description would bring their user symbol with it, and cause display issues. Fixed by inazar
  • When posting a Journal to a Super Group from the Journal tab of that Group's page, Journal Skins installed to the Group would not load. Fixed by inazar
  • An extra button was appearing on the Browse page next to the thumbnail setting buttons. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • When submitting deviations to a Group, deviations marked as Mature Content wouldn't display in the "Contribute to Group" modal. Fixed by outgoingcoyote

Your Feedback

  • With regard to the Discuss topic from last week, many deviants who responded said they commissioned other artists for personal reasons, usually for art of their characters or as a gift to a friend.
  • Deviants who said that they commission artists for professional reasons mentioned doing so for graphics for their website or covers for their written works, among other things.
  • Several deviants commented on last week's update when DeviantArt encountered errors with uploading files. We appreciate your letting us know! Having said that, please be sure to file a bug report at the Help Desk should you encounter bugs in the future, as that way the appropriate teams are informed first.

Editing Deviations

When editing previously submitted deviations, what is your primary reason for doing so? (e.g is it to change the main file of the deviation, to update the description, etc.) How often do you edit your devations?

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!
  • We're still Beta Testing the new mobile website header that was launched last week, but in response to feedback from the Beta Testing community, your message total will now display in the menu on the mobile website.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, deviants said that they would like individual deviations and Group deviations to be separated, when viewing their Message Center.
  • PlatinaSi, Lumdrop and a few other deviants suggested a third separation item in addition to the separation of individual and Group messages, specifically to view updates from deviants they've marked as Friends.

Commissioning Artists

When you commission an artist to create work, do you generally do so for yourself, or as a gift for others? Do you find your commissions are more for personal or professional reasons?

Give the Gift of Art Challenge Winners

Thu Jan 15, 2015, 12:29 PM
The Give the Gift of Art Challenge winners are in! See the winning pieces and the thoughtful gifts they represent. Always looking up to you - The Gift Of Art: by Maxxie-Delu
Wacom Give The Gift Of Art Challenge Winners

Winners

Wacom and DeviantArt challenged you visualize and depict the art of giving, and our community responded with breathtaking generosity. Three esteemed artists from the community—TsaoShin, DestinyBlue, and DavidRapozaArt—studied every semi-finalist entry with the difficult job of choosing three standout winners, and we're proud to announce the winners are in!

The three pieces below stole our judges' hearts with their representations of thoughtful gifts and magnificent execution. In addition, the staff at Wacom pored over the rest of the semi-finalists and selected their favorite piece to receive the honorable mention. Winners and the honorable mention will each receive spectacular prizes, including prints of their gorgeous pieces to give to their loved ones!

Click through the deviations below to see the story behind the gift, and tell us what gift you would give. The only limit is your imagination!

Always looking up to you - The Gift Of Art:

"Maxxie-Delu invites us into her journey with her Grandfather, cleverly weaving a touching narrative through her painting; showing the the gift of art being passed between family. Personal yet relatable, with it's clear visual message, this piece tugs at the heartstrings."

Welcome!

"What I really love about this piece is the style VolaPardus brought to the challenge. The use of shapes moving organically throughout the composition, and the saturated colors drawing us into the focus, work beautifully. This is an excellent tribute to VolaPardus' family, I love it!"

The Magic in the Ordinary

"It's too easy to lose the sense of wonder in the world as we get older. The pressure of growing up often pushes us to forget the magic we saw in everyday objects when we were children. Kalkri's beautiful illustration shows us that holding onto the realm of the imaginary can continue to inspire us and shape young minds into creative freethinkers who will be able to live in a world without boundaries."

I Give You My World

NilaNandita's "I Give You My World" is alive with color, creativity and imagination. It represents the value of not only creating art, but just as importantly, sharing it with others.

Thank you for your feedback on the last Site Update of last year!

  • Feedback regarding the change to display of hidden comments was positive.
  • A few deviants said that they would like hidden replies to function in the same way as hidden comments. Unfortunately, there are technical limitations that prevent us from doing so at this time, but the feedback has been noted.
  • Deviants liked the change to the subnavigation on the Browse page, particularly the addition of the "Return to Top" button.
