deviantART muro drawing comments are here! New deviantART muro integration!DeviantART muro has been taking the Interwebs by storm: a multi-colored, hand-drawn storm swiftly done in fun brushes with pretty rainbows and vibrant lightning bolts of awesome. But confining this awesomeness to deviations and the DrawPLZ forum seemed restraining for an art website, so we are proud to bring you the following...Express yourself without words! DeviantART muro is now integrated with journal and news article commenting.Words can be difficult at times. Even the most advanced emoticons and plz accounts can still fail to convey your true feelings. Or sometimes you just feel more comfortable expressing your innermost thoughts with imagery. Whatever the case -- for the lulz or for heartfelt sentiments that be conveyed no other way -- we are proud to roll out this new integration on everyone's favorite drawing tool, deviantART muro, into comments on journals and news a
deviantART site upgrade! FELLOW DEVIANTS!The good people of Devious Technology (#dt) are doing a behind-the-scenes upgrade of the whole site -- at least the CSS -- which will mostly only affect Internet Explorer."How will it affect Internet Explorer?" you ask. Well, if you're using version 8 (and most of you are!), or even version 7, you should get a nice speed boost when browsing the site, as your browser will be using the latest version of its rendering system! However, if you're using version 6, then you'll most likely want to upgrade to a browser that isn't as old as deviantART itself. Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera will run deviantART with all features and tip-to
Additional A/B testing for deviation pages! GREETINGS AGAIN, FELLOW DEVIANTS!Two #hq blogs from me in one day! How did you get so lucky? AMIRITE? Way back in July, you may recall a blog titled Testing deviation pages! Which team are you on?!, that detailed the fact we were introducing A/B testing to certain areas of the site -- beginning with deviation pages. During this time, some deviants were placed on Team A for testing, while other deviants were placed on Team B. SO, WHAT'S NEW?Well, we're at it again! We're making additional changes to deviation pages, specifically (and only for) deviants placed on Team A. Deviations will automatically open in 'wide view' or 'tall view' depending on which shows more of the image (as long as it doesn't push the title, artist, and ads off-screen). The fullview will touch the edge
Profile Page galleries get a face-lift! New and improved Profile Page galleries! With the release of Groups, galleries on Profile Pages have been feeling a little out of date and missing some of the features and functionality of its newer Groups cousin. Cousin Groups has been taking all the glory and fame, leaving your gallery out in the cold. But no more! It's time for your Profile Page to take back the spotlight! Profile Page Galleries! That's right, deviant galleries have been updated -- allowing you faster browsing and super editing powers with a much more user friendly interface. What's new! Faster page loading for your gallery Slick new folder icons No more separate 'edit mode' -- pencil menus and drag and drop are always available Totally tidied up optionsWhat does it look like?To begin your gallery cus
Search results limits = faster search for allFellow deviants,As you may have noticed, we've recently made some changes to deviantART's search -- as we've limited search to displaying the first 1,000 results. This change was brought about because of technical limitations. However, with the 1,000 search result limit now implemented, we're able to provide a faster and more stable search function to deviantART's community. What does it mean? The less-technical version:Our search engine can only grab deviations in huge blocks, then show them piece by piece. It used to deal with blocks of 10,000 deviations at a time which, unfortunately, got slower and slower over time. The new search engine deals only with blocks of 1,000 deviations at a time, which is one of the many reasons it's able to run much faster and keep up with the 300 search queries we get every second! The more-technical version:Due to the nature of how our search engine is implemented, all result
deviantART muro on your Profile Page! deviantART muro now integrated into Profile Page comments! Our HTML5 drawing tool took the interwebz by storm when released this past August. We saw some truly amazing deviations submitted and lots of fun being had in the DrawPLZ Forum. Because of this, in September we gave you the ability to use deviantART muro in News and Journal comments. After taking the community's feedback into consideration, we feel the next logical step is to allow you to share deviantART muro creations on Profile Pages. As of this moment, you now have the ability to visually communicate on Profile Pages using deviantART muro! Because our community is comprised of artists and art appreciators, we have come to believe that text can be constraining--some things are not meant to be expressed in words. With that in mind
New deviantART muro features are here! deviantART muro brings early presents for you!If you've been watching this space, you know we've been moving very quickly with deviantART muro, our HTML5 drawing tool. Last week we announced that deviantART muro would be enabled on Profile Pages, and I am pleased to present that we have even more exciting goodies! ::drum roll:: Just released... saving enhancements and more tools! Saving enhancements! As you may recall, when you save drawings in deviantART muro, you have to specify a "slot" where you would things to be to saved -- think of slots as a "file," but cooler. With some technical upgrades, we were able to increase the number of save slots for each deviant. Now, everyone has 3 slots. BUT... if you're a P
Sending Notes the Simple Way!They are prized gems. And while some deviants may get many, they are considered by some -- including myself -- to be the cause of great excitement and are forever cherished as treasured possessions.I am, of course, speaking of none other than freshly baked pie Notes! And now, Notes are easier to use than ever before because you can send them to fellow deviants directly from their Profile Page!To use this feature, simply visit any deviant's Profile Page and click the "Send a Note" button in the upper right corner. Like magic, a box will appear for you to type any additional recipient names, a subject, and your message! You can also include your signature, check the emoticon list for anything you might want to add, and preview your message before you send it.Once your perfectly crafted Note is sent, you can visit yo
Updates: deviantART muro, Journal Editor, and moreFellow Deviants,As of late, we've been spending a lot of time on several awesome projects, but I wanted to give you an update on two of them: deviantART muro and the Journal Editor. DeviantART muro received some high-tech enhancements that your web browser will adore. Your Journal Editor got a swanky face-lift that we're sure you'll appreciate. Let me explain... deviantART muro Optimization = faster speeds! Because deviantART muro is using cutting-edge web technologies, there is very little precedent for crafting super fast HTML5 applications. We are fully aware that rendering your sketches was laggy and that some of your browsers threw temper tantrums when trying to draw complex scenes. Because of that, we took a deep dive into the depths of HTML5. What our developers found was shocking, and you can read all the nerdy details here. Because each browser han
What's up with birthday notifications?! Birthday Notification Update!A recent site-wide poll asked for your thoughts about birthday notifications in the Message Center. Your votes and comments have been heard loud and clear, and we'd like to update you on what we've done based on your feedback. To recap: "What are your thoughts about the birthday notifications in the Message Center?"They're useful for alerting me to the upcoming birthdays of my fellow deviants = 24%Meh, I don't mind them = 22%They'd be fine, if they didn't increase the count of my Message Center = 14%I wish I had the option to turn them off = 27%They're not useful at all and you should kill the feature = 8%What are birthday notifications? = 4%1. Birthday notifications were launched in conjunction with Cake badges -- to help alert deviants when their friends are celebrating their actual birthdays and their deviantART birthdays. Wh
Film Gets an Upgrade! We have just rolled out two major updates to deviantART Film The first is that the player now utilizes HTML5 which will allow you to view deviantART films on your mobile devices, assuming, of course, that they support HTML5 Please note that the HTML5 player will only work on newer browsers (Chrome & Safari) with IE9 and Firefox support coming later. For those of you using older browsers, it will revert to a smoother version of our original flash player. The second is that we now support full HD Video (720p & 1080p) While viewing a film deviation, you will be given the option of choosing a resolution through the drop down menu in between the player bar and the volume control seen here:For those of you that are submitting to our Film & Animation gallery, you will notice that the process is slightly different. Rather then generating thumbs during submission, you will be able to select frames to formulate a composite thumb
Enhanced deviation view has arrived! Full view deviation changes are here! You asked and we listened! Three weeks ago, deviantART held our first ever town hall meeting in Los Angeles, California. The goal of the event was simple: interact with fellow community members and hold informal discussions about all things deviantART -- ranging from new features and upgrades, to issues about art theft, to site functionality, Points, search, and everything in between. Roughly 30 deviants from the Los Angeles area were in attendance, but thoughts and opinions of deviants everywhere where well represented as *akreon and =tanathe came armed with feedback from their "We'll ask the staff" journal. One of the common complaints we heard both in-person and online had due to with the fact that since the launch of v7, it became harder to see the original siz

Minor enhancements born from community feedback!Hey deviants! It's Friday, it's May... good times all around! You might already be aware, but I wanted to share a quick update in regards to some minor enhancements that we recently launched. These enhancements are a direct result from community feedback. Check them out:Minor Enhancement #1: Note TimestampsYes, very minor indeed, but we modified the timestamps on Notes, so now you can see the full timestamp instead of just "40 days ago." By the way, did you know that Notes is one of the most used features on the site? Around 200,000 notes are sent every day! Minor Enhancement #2: Presence of Mature ContentWe received a lot of feedback about mature content deviations showing as placeholder results in the browsing/searching environment if you had the Mature Content filter turned on. So, for those of you who browse with the filter set, you will no longer have to deal with placeholder images. Please note: this will only affect your browsing and
Forums! The update you've been waiting for!A few weeks ago, we informed you about a little Spring Cleaning that was taking place in the Forums and Chat. We even teased about working on some long-time-coming Forum improvements and enhancements. Without further ado, we're delighted to provide you with the details for specific updates that will be taking place throughout the Forums over the next handful weeks. What's going? We'll be removing all the Status Forums and, instead, providing a link that directly goes to the Zendesk Status Forums. (This provides a consolidated approach, as well as offers the ability to subscribe to status updates via email.) This system has been test for a while now and we've received positive feedback from those who have participated. Thank you! We'll be saying goodbye to the Sports Forum, simply because it's our least a

The ability to "turn off" badges Llamas, cake, and badges... oh my!Llamas are fuzzy and adorable, but too many make for one smelly pasture -- not to mention the constant spitting. And while cake is delicious, too much can make you sick. We realize some community members feel tired of smelly llamas and sugar crashes from too much cake. With this in mind, we present the following... Not a fan of badges? This update is for you! We've been listening and learning, and one thing you've let us know is that while we have hardcore badge enthusiasts, some deviants would prefer not show badges on their Profile Pages and do not want to receive such notifications in their Message Centers. If that's you, check out these updates, driven by user feedback! Disable all badges in one clean step by clicking the "Clear all featured badges" link found on your B

Emoticon Legend update: Smilie face!Remember a few weeks ago, when we called all pixels as the first steps to update our beloved Emoticon Legend? Someone very near and dear to our hearts (me) went through each. and every. single comment. on the blog, looking for standout must-have emoticons, replacement suggestions, and tips on which to retire. It wasn’t necessarily a numbers game, as we wanted to incorporate the most basic, essential emoticons that captured what it was to be a deviant in 50x50 pixels or less. At first. But it was about 500 comments in or so that I realized five emoticons stood out above them all. Five emotes that are so ubiquitous around the site, a few commenters didn’t know that they WEREN’T already integrated emotes.Without further ado and without any hilarious attempts to work them into a sentence, here are five emoticons we have JUST ADDED INTO THE LEGEND. (Oh, I hope you were sitting down. I probably should have said that
Search Update: search result limit raised to 2,500On November 30th, 2010, #hq posted a blog describing a new 1,000 result limit on search queries. It didn't take long for the community to express its feelings in regards to this being a less-than-popular update.Still, we knew the 1,000 result limit was necessary in order for search to function properly for all deviants. (Remember, it was implemented after many months of the search function failing to work on a regular basis.) We made the change knowing it was a temporary fix and never stopped working towards a better overall solution. Thanks to the efforts of $mccann, deviantART's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and lead search engineer, we're glad to announce that we've upped the search ability to produce 2,500 results. With this new, expanded limit, you'll be able to see over twice as many results as before. The 1,000 result limit was the number-one complaint f
Velocity Filter: countering Favorites abuse!Everyone loves a good (Favorite) now and again! Favoriting a deviation is an excellent way to show your appreciation for a piece of art that moves you in some way. However, we've recently seen this feature be used outside of its intended purpose. In the past, we've allowed deviants to as they pleased -- with no limits placed on how often someone could different deviations. Though, when we noticed that certain deviants were abusing the system, in such a manner that was both harmful to the community and to site security, we needed to step in and take action. Such incidents occurred just a couple of weeks ago, and thanks to the efforts of our marvelous #dt team, we have since introduced a new system to keep ing at reasonable levels. Gather 'round! It's short story time!It just so happened that one deviant created a script to at a rate no human could sustain, causing issues within
Forums! The final round-upAt the beginning of June, we made an announcement that provided an update to all the recent enhancement to the Forums. Since then, we're delighted to say that we have now completed all the agreed enhancements apart from one -- the addition of search functionality -- and that should happen over the next week. $mccann has promised! We thought you'd appreciate a round up of everything that's been upgraded! Now Live! No more ads in the Forums! Forum pagination. Order forum replies by newest first. The ability to browse back, up to 1 week ago. (This means you can view threads that have had any activity within the last week.) Thumbnails are live in all forums. The option for the original poster to turn off thumbnails and icons has also been add
Emoticon Legend Update: The Emoticons Strike BackLovers of emotions as illustrated in icon form, we’ve got another update for you! We noticed that our last five additions (, , , , and ) were a little on the negative side. We can’t have that! Emoticons also need to be expressions of joy, of happiness, of carefree joie de vivre! And then two more sassy ones!So have an emoticon seat () and get ready for the next five additions! :happybounce: by ~jamal1 :squee: by `CookiemagiK :hooray: by `Gomotes :shifty: by `CookiemagiK:stinkeye: :stinkeye: by ~Scorpion81We are also respectfully retiring seven icons that have outlived their glory days. We will miss them. A little.Instances of these images will revert back to their text form, but according to our hack team of Icon Scientists, no one has used these icons since 1985. Our Scientists don't actually understand how time works, but trust us. These
deviantPOINTS: An updateOver the past few months we’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the way that members in our community have been offering points as payment for certain types of services within deviantART. We’ve seen all sorts of creative uses, from offering to critique your work for a few points, journal features for a few more points and my personal fav -- avatars, journal skins and any other sort of art commission for points. It’s been great to see deviants use their experience and skills to fund their super group upgrades, prints purchases and even treating their friends and families to their very first item of deviantWEAR.As time rolled on, we noticed a new trend creeping in. People were not just offering a small number of points for a task that they’d normally do as part of their daily deviating -- people were offering thousands of page views for hundreds of points, and there seemed to be no limit to the amount that could be purchased, or offered. It didn
