Good Nudes vs. Bad Nudes?

Contours in Context
The argument for the nude in art:

Our visual perception of the human face and then the human body has set the basis since the beginning of
human history for our sense of what is beautiful and what initiates all our seminal ineffable sublime feelings
about the nature of love, life, desire, destiny, eternity, ad infinitum.  The curvatures and symmetries of the
human body even lay the geometric basis for the artistic structures of all our art forms, not only for the visual
arts but also for literature and architecture. Given the primacy of the body as the beginning of all that we are
in life, and given the eye as the primary receiver for the collection of all information in our lives, how could
the artistic nude not be a massively represented art form on a global arts forum like deviantART?  And besides,
nudes are something people enjoy looking at – and art needs no other justification than being something that
brings some small amount of pleasure into our lives.

The knock on the nude in art:

You mean men enjoy looking at nudes.  And women not nearly so much – because they have to endure the daily indignities
of being treated like mindless “objects” by clueless men.  Nude art in any media will always teeter precariously on a very
fine edge separating the “empowering” from the “demeaning.”  It’s all in the context.  Helmut Newton famously photographed
a model on a bed wearing a saddle. Is this erotic fine
art or just high-gloss perversion?  Is it the artist’s intent to audaciously exercise his adoration of the nude form or to
merely indulge misogynistic darknesses? And you, viewing Newton’s photograph, will have to make your own decision as to
the worth of the piece, based in the unique context of everything you’ve experienced in your life.

The Eternal Question:
When is the Nude art...
and when is it not?

These questions seem to always arise when one encounters the nude – in photography, paintings, sculptures, even in song and
literature – an encounter fraught with more emotional, political and personal baggage than almost any other art experience.
The artist’s intent is immediately at issue: Is this a sharing, a provocation, a statement?  Is this erotica to be enjoyed for
its sensual beauty and invocation of the mysteries of desire?  Or is this prurient junk fit only for baser purposes?  Or does
the nudity have very little to do with the ultimate message of the piece? The problem?

We don’t really know the artist’s
intent – And we’re left with our own
reaction to the artwork for judging
its artistic worth and merit.
That’s the problem.

It’s so intimately subjective

One person’s erotic art is another person’s worthless sensationalism.  There can be no ultimate judge or definer –
and thankfully the majority of people in the world have recognized this fact of life and are against most censorships.
This leaves us with the vexing debate as to how much nudes is too much nudes on deviantART.

The only thought I can offer is that, because men (and women) photographing, painting and sculpting nudes is not going
away. We know better than to try to censor art or empower bureaucratic “judges” to set limits, it is imperative that we
keep the current conversation going about what is good and beautiful and what is bad and dangerous about our ubiquitous
nudes situation.  If only we can remain ever mindful and considerate of – and always remain in dialogue about – the good
and bad possible side effects of the nude art we enjoy, then maybe we can have our erotica and our feminism, too.

Kind of like enjoying alcohol, but knowing to never drive drunk.  Art is never entirely stand alone.  The context is
always present, transformative, and as important to the experience of art as the art object itself.

In February of 2012 I plan on revisiting this subject by interviewing artists and models on deviantART to get their
thoughts and opinions on the ideas and arguments that are represented in the comments section of this article.  After
answering the questions please let me know which artist or models you might like to see interviewed for that article.
I am also considering providing the commentary as a live interview/debate instead of an article.

Any thoughts on that idea?

Questions for the reader:

  1. Do you think there is too much nude subject matter on deviantART or is it a non-issue for you?  How much do you think your gender or sexual preferences might influence your answer?

  2. When is censorship of art permissible?   Where would you draw the line?  What rational rule could you offer as a practical guideline?

  3. Have you ever had a work of art you created censored or banned in any way?

  4. If an artist really believes in what he or she has created, how should the artist respond to censorship of that art?  Have you been made aware of an instance of “art suppression” via the Internet?

  5. Would you ever suggest to another artist that he or she should tone a work of art down or agree to the censorship of an art object in a specific situation?

Article Update:

Many of you have brought up the notion that any isolated display of genitals would not be artistic.
Would your opinion change if the discussion involved Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party"
or Georgia O'Keeffe’s flower paintings?

Close ups of your "junk" with some clever word title isn't art.

I believe censorship should come into play if anything too 'private' was to be put on some sort of lavish display, but only because there are a lot of younger users on this site. If the blockers are only warnings and the younger viewers choose to see it, then really what they see is there own responsibility (they were warned). Whether nudity, of any form, is art, you really have to ask yourself what makes art. If passion, hard work and dedication went into it, whatever the results, it is art in some way. If it's just something where it is painfully obvious you went into the basement stripped bare and snapped some pictures with very little thought or effort behind it, then whether it can be called art I'll leave to you. Nude art is a rather controversial, but at the end of the day, artists will have to draw some nude figures just for the purpose of anatomy.

There's a line between perverted and truly artistic. It's fine to appreciate both, I think, though some might feel otherwise and I honestly can't blame them. Obviously testosterone influences our desire to make/see the pervy ones, but the artistic ones are more gender-open, so to speak. Anyhow, I'd avoid posting the perverted ones on dA, but it's fine if people do that.
Is the non-artistic pervy art wrong per se? That's a question for the ages. (read: maybe so, but we enjoy it anyway.) Is it really even art? Well, that's an even deeper question.
Also I think it'd be a good idea to avoid mature artwork on the front page, or make that an option.

Sometimes, i see some way too questionable stuff on the home page, and even with content blockers on my sister can still see some of it. So long as nudes are kept from the home page, then Yeh I'm fine with the amount of nudes on dA, porno or not.

Do you think there is too much nude subject matter on deviantART or is it a non-issue for you? How much do you think your gender or sexual preferences might influence your answer?

The question is not its quantity, but rather its quality. Some artistic nudity photographers priorize vulgarity instead of elegance.

When is censorship of art permissible? Where would you draw the line? What rational rule could you offer as a practical guideline?

I would not draw the line myself. Art is not meant to be censored. However, exposing one's vagina in a vulgar and undecent manner would be the limit. Nevertheless, everything that one does is art in a way.

Have you ever had a work of art you created censored or banned in any way?

Never thus far.

If an artist really believes in what he or she has created, how should the artist respond to censorship of that art? Have you been made aware of an instance of “art suppression” via the Internet?

Only when an artwork crossed borderline pornography territory.

Would you ever suggest to another artist that he or she should tone a work of art down or agree to the censorship of an art object in a specific situation?

An artist is supposed to respond to his or her own needs, despite the critics and the opinions. It is a selfish argument, but it's the cold truth.

Here's a new question that got put to me during a debate that I wanted to put to the artistic community ( at the risk of sounding bad) are artistic nudes of children considered alright, or should that be censored? I know in some classical paintings and during the Victorian Age ( they took nude photos of children, usually at the request of the family) featured some of this.

So- yes, its okay ( with discretion of course) or "no, you sick sick twisted person" ? Or does it fall into the same category as mentioned here in this post, as in a sort of in between state.

Yes, I don't care what your culture, religion, or upbringing Keep children innocent! And not to sound like a troll here, but mostly the people who look that sort of stuff ARE perverts! I did a case not too long ago, where a guy was found with a few gig's of child porno (nudes included) on his computer, a lot of which were from dA and sites like it (IE flickr and 4chan, though thats a given).

1. i really have no issue with naked art. We were born naked; nature intended us to be naked. If we always cover ourselves in cloth then were stuck with appericiating our bodies for what they are rather than wrapping them in illusion. that said, dont just randomly start walking down the street naked! However, i feel art is expressing emotions and ressonating them in others, not just random flicks of naked women. sexual preferences? I am a hetrosexual (like opposite gender, so in my case guys) woman but i have no idea how that would effect my veiw of this topic. i like seing most naked art, as it's ussually a celebration of the human body and improving self-esteem and self concept!

2) I don't think there is a very standard line. Personally, i would be reluctant to draw the groin area or any "acts" however, as long as there is some meaning in my work, i wouldn't place a filter on it. tbh though, i dont really enjoy drawing naked people as i like drawing chlothes or scantily clad people at best.

3) No, however recently i am starting to use the mature content filter more. I do worry just where DA draws the line though as they never made it very clear in the guidelines.

4) i feel "sex" and anything sensual is always either premoted or demoted in the media. Either way, they are obssessed with any form of nudity, indecency, or love making. I have never really gone too much into the subject so i am unaware of "art oppression". I think as long as those under a certain age dont see certain things then it should be allowed.

5) Not unless it was really graphic or disturbing. Then again i would only ask them to give some kind of warning first. I think it would have been nice to have a warning first then people make their own desicions.

ps, no idea why i did the muro, sorry ignore ;)
