Browse Through Journals in Your Message Center
When browsing through deviations in your Message Center, you can use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to flip through artwork and use the "Remove From Messages" button to remove each of those deviations. Many people have been requesting that this feature be extended to Journals as well. We're happy to tell you that we just added this functionality!

New deviantART ThumbnailsIn the weekly Site Updates, we've been telling you all about the changes that have been launched to deviantART, getting your feedback, and reporting all the bugs that have been fixed.
This change is a little different, since it involves a feature that has been in place for a long time. We think it deserves an announcement of its own, ahead of time.
The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement.
Some of the problems with existing thumbnails are: they leave a lot of blank space around them, there isn't a lot of room for text for literature deviations, and the thumbnails don't present very tall/wide images well.

Today marks an awareness day over a subject that can mean many things to many people. Self Harm (or Self Injury) is the act of physical damage to oneself, usually as a coping strategy for expressing deep distress or coping in difficult situations. Self harm commonly is associated with cutting, but can also refer to any physical damage to the self including burning, hitting, taking overdoses, swallowing chemicals, bleaching, hair pulling ( trichotilliomania), scratching and so forth.
You may know what it is, but it is often the reasons why that people are not familiar with. There is still this belief and stereotype surrounding the type of person likely to harming them-self, but the truth is, it could be anyone no matter what gender, culture or age. I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated

The following guideline changes are in effect:

The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)

Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.

Before contacting the CEA we ask that you do the following:

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.

Message Center Performance Upgrades

Message Center news to know!

Today we completed a three-month process of implementing performance upgrades to the Message Center. With these improvements in place, we're able to increase site speed and decrease the amount of errors deviants may experience in their Message Centers. Our Devious Technology and Tech Ops teams have been working hard to move Message Center data to its own dedicated database cluster. We made a considerable investment in servers with 96GB of memory and 12 CPU cores to handle 6 billion messages and 6500 queries per second.

What does this mean for you?

Absolutely nothing. We hope. The upgrades have already taken place and you shouldn't notice any change in your normal deviantART experience. Eventually, you should notice an increase in site speed and a decrease in Message Center errors.

If we do run into hiccups, you may experience slowness and possibly errors in the Message Center. Some of these errors may include: delayed deliveries, failed message deletes, and things of that nature. Members who have more than 10,000 messages in a single Message Center folder may possibly experience some issues, including a few messages not being delivered or a few messages reappearing after they've already been deleted.

We are closely monitoring site performance in the wake of this upgrade. In the event something goes wrong and major issues are detected, we will revert to the old system to prevent further issues. However, things are looking good. As they say, hope for the best and expect the worst.
